The green-themed, winter film series, sponsored by Sustainable Stockton and MREA, will kick-off on Thursday, October 8, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. at the MREA building, 7558 Deer Road, Custer. A book discussion group, using selected readings related to the topic of how food is produced and consumed in the United States, is planned to begin in October this year. The discussion will use food as the entry point to talk about how our food-choices affect our local environment, economy, and community as well as encourage participants to explore positive ways to address those concerns locally. On Tuesday, September 22nd, at 7:00 p.m. in the Prairie Room (basement level) at the Portage County Library in downtown Stevens Point, people interested in joining this discussion group are invited to gather to determine a time and place for future meetings and also order materials. The Fall Tour of UWSP Emeritus Forestry Professor, Dr. Hans Schabel’s property, has been postponed until next spring. More information will be available at a later date. § Community Calendar. We plan to start listing appropriate, community events (not for profit) happening in the Town of Stockton that are not necessarily sustainability-related. If you have submissions for our Community Calendar, please send them to Sharon Reichert for committee approval and possible listing.§ Last Summer Local Garden Tour. The last of the this season’s local garden tours, sponsored by Portage County UW-Extension and Central Rivers Farmshed, will be on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, from 7 pm to 8 pm, at 1375 Bob White Lane, Stevens Point, WI. Join host Jen Zach in viewing her large vegetable garden, small fruits, orchard with larger trees, many flower and shrub beds—herbs, annuals and perennials. Jen and her family use organic gardening methods. In addition, they raise chickens for meat and eggs, and this year they have added two bee hives. All are welcome to attend. Central Waters Farmshed, Interfaith Community for the Earth, UW Extension Service, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Stevens Point, are sponsoring food preservation workshops this summer/fall.
